Question: What Is Salafiyyah?

Answer: Salafiyyah is following the way of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) and his Sahabah for they are our Salaf (predecessors) who preceded us, so following them is Salafiyyah. As for taking Salafiyyah as a special Manhaj (Methodology) such that everyone who differs with it is considered astray even if he was on the truth; then this is beyond doubt opposite to Salafiyyah.

All the Salaf called to Islaam and to unite upon the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) and they did not declare astray anyone who differs with them (in a certain issue) because of (a different) interpretation (Taweel), except in matters of Aqeedah (beliefs) because they considered him, who differed in Aqeedah as astray.
But, in our time, some who took the path of Salafiyyah consider astray everyone who differs from them even if the truth were to be on his side. And they took a Hizbi (partisan) Manhaj, just like the other Hizbs (parties), who divide the religion. This (their way) must be rejected and not be approved of.

Hadeeth of Alee (ra) Concerning Knowledge

Posted in Seeking Knowledge, The Salaf with tags , , , , , , , , , , on September 16, 2008 by fearthedunya

And from this understanding, is what Abu Nu’aim and others have reported from Kumail Ibn Ziyaad 31 on the authority of ‘Alee, radyAllaahu ‘anhu, that he said:

“The people are of three types: the learned scholar, the student of knowledge who is upon the path towards salvation and the uncivilized ignorant follower following every ideology, blowing in the direction of every wind. He is not guided by the light of knowledge nor is he established upon a firm pillar.”

Then he mentioned some words on the benefit of knowledge, up to the point where he said:

Here! Indeed, here is immense knowledge – and he pointed to his chest – if only I could gather those who would carry it!

Shaykh ’Ubayd al-Jaabiree on Taraaweeh Prayers In the Mosques of the People of Innovation
Translation by Abul-Hasan Maalik Aadam

Questioner: O Shaykh, in the month of Ramadaan, some of the Salafees leave off the Taraaweeh prayers in the masaajid of the Salafees and go to the masaajid of other than them because of the beautiful recitations of their Imaams, so is this [action of theirs] permissible?

Shaykh ’Ubayd: In reality this question is strange, and that is because some of the Salafees leave off the Taraaweeh prayer of Ramadaan with their brothers from the Salafees and go to pray it with the people of innovation due to their beautiful voices…”

Questioner: Shaykh, the question does not say ‘the people of innovation,’ rather it merely says ‘other than them’ (i.e. other than the Salafees).

Shaykh ’Ubayd: Other than them, meaning the people of innovation, because if the word ‘other’ is used as the opposite of the Salafee, it means the person of innovation. As for the answer to this question, I advise these youth from the Salafees to pray with their brothers from the Salafis and not to go to the people of innovation, because this will increase their numbers and strengthen them against the people of the sunnah. That is one point; another point is that following after the beautiful voices of those who recite and bouncing from one reciter to another, because of a beautiful voice, is from the affairs of fitnah as has been related from Imaam Ahmad (d.241H) and others, may Allaah have mercy upon them.1

1 This was taken from the questions and answers of Masjid Rahmah ’Umrah group with Shaykh ’Ubayd al-Jaabiree in 1429H/2008CE. It was sent out recently on a mailing list by our noble brothers at

Allah Has Named Us Muslims…

So Why Ascribe Ourselves to the Salaf?

This doubt was very beautifully answered by Imaam al-Albaani in his discussion with someone on this subject, recorded on the cassette entitled, “I am Salafi”, and here is a presentation of the vital parts of it:

Shaikh al-Albaani: “When it is said to you, ‘What is your madhhab’, what is your reply?”

Questioner: “A Muslim”.

Shaikh al-Albaani: “This is not sufficient!”.

Questioner: “Allaah has named us Muslims” and he recited the saying of Allaah Most High, “He is the one who has called you Muslims beforehand.” (al-Hajj 22:7 8)

Shaikh al-Albaani: “This would be a correct answer if we were in the very first times (of Islaam) before the sects had appeared and spread. But if we were to ask, now, any Muslim from any of these sects with which we differ on account of aqeedah, his answer would not be any different to this word. All of them – the Shi’ite Rafidi, the Khaariji, the Nusayri Alawi – would say, “I am a Muslim”. Hence, this is not sufficient in these days.”

Benefitting from Knowledge

Stated the noble Imaam of ahlus-sunnah wal-jama’aah, Ibnul-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah,

“I have met many mashaayikh and the affair of one was different from the other, and their knowledge capacities were of varying levels. And the one whose company I benefited from the most was the one who used to apply what he knew, even though there were those who were more knowledgeable than him.

I met a group from the people of hadeeth who memorised and knew a lot, however they would permit backbiting under the guise of ‘jar wat-ta’deel’ (criticism and accreditation), they would take monetary payment in return for narrating hadeeth, and they would be hasty in giving answers, even if they are wrong, lest their status diminishes.
